“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”
– Henry David Thoreau
I became an investor at 26. I was a drummer in a rock group that had just sold over a million albums, and for the first time in my life, had excess capital. I spent the next several years building my portfolio, without a clear destination in mind. My one-word financial plan simply read; “Growth.” As a musician I was disciplined and focused, but outside of a responsibility to my bandmates, I was a young man with few obligations. I lived within my means, although occasionally went a little overboard with the trappings of success. My diverse collection of hobbies and interests grew into a portfolio of its own.
Our greatest gift lies in our ability to connect, adapt and be inspired by one another.
I married in my mid-thirties, shifting gears personally and professionally. I followed my interest in the capital markets, beginning my career as a financial advisor at one of the major Wall Street firms. It seemed like an atypical transition to some, but after spending over a decade in the music industry, I felt I could speak to the value of exploring opportunities, while addressing the importance of planning around uncertainty. As a financial advisor, I was also forced to be honest about my own priorities, which had evolved with the responsibilities of being a husband and eventually father of four children. The Harleys I considered an asset in my twenties, for example, were no longer an acceptable source of risk. I didn’t always like it, but my faith and vocation provided a framework for reflection that forced me to contend with my professed values and the people I love.
Ultimately the bridge between my first career as a musician and my second as a financial advisor is one of connection and the desire to embark on a shared journey. Drummers, after all, are built for relationship (there’s the old joke – “What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend?… Homeless.”). The drummer in me enjoys reflecting on the rhythms and patterns of life, to the tempos and measures in which we move. As a wealth advisor, I’ve come to appreciate the connection between these rhythms and patterns and the importance of aligning our values with how to allocate our precious resources of time, energy and money.
